It is finally here and it is not all that different from the leaks and reports that we have been sharing with you for the past couple of months. As expected, the iPhone 5 comes with a design update along with specifications that puts it at the level of the high end Android smartphones. DesignThe first thing you notice is the design. The shape is similar to the iPhone 4/4S with the metal band and flat front/back. The biggest difference is the increased display size and aluminium and glass back. The iPhone 5 comes with a widescreen 4 inch retina display making it the same width as the iPhone 4S only taller. The iPhone 5�s headphone jack has been relocated to the bottom of the device. HardwareThe iPhone 5 weighs just 112 grams and is 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S. This makes it the thinnest smartphone to date with a depth of just 7.6mm. Instead of only glass on the back like the iPhone 4/4S, the iPhone 5�s back plate is two toned with glass at the top and bottom and metal everywhere else. The home button sits at the center underneath the screen and the volume buttons to the left hand side along with the mute/un-mute switch. The iPhone 5 has three microphones, one at the back, one at the front and one at the bottom which provides better quality sound and improved noise reduction. InternalsThe iPhone 5 is powered by an A6 processor which is twice as fast as the A5 meaning everything loads quicker. The speaker on the iPhone 5 has shrunk down 20% and the earpiece now supports noise cancellation for crisp and clear voice calls. Wideband audio has also been introduced meaning that you can hear frequencies you couldn�t on previous generation iPhones. WirelessAnother new feature is the support for 4G LTE. Having 4G LTE means users will see marked improvements in streaming heavier content like HD videos and high quality audio streams. 4G LTE on the iPhone 5 supports speeds up to 100Mbps. Wi-Fi now supports two bands, 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. These tests were carried out on both the latest public release of iOS as well as a beta version of iOS 6. When running iOS 5.1, the simulator increased the space between app icon rows to symmetrically lay out the existing four ways on the larger screen. With iOS 6 an additional row of icons was added to the display showing the iOS 6 has internal logic for a new user interface layout on a bigger device. This is all very interesting but it really doesn�t provide us with any proof that the next generation iPhone will ship with the reported larger display. What it does show is that Apple has put some thought into producing larger display devices. According to the AppleInsider, Apple�s supply chain is ready for the initial increase in manufacturing, however availability of in-cell touch panels from LG and Sharp may be low due to decreased yield rates. These manufacturers will however be able to supply the touch panels to display manufacturer JDI. Other components like metal and glass casings for the new design and modem chips are also available in good supply. According to the source the leaked images of the next iPhone are very likely authentic. They have also stated that the new design may come with Gorilla Glass for enhanced heat dissipation and improved wireless reception. All this information lines up perfectly with the reports we have been reading from multiple sources that are claiming that the next generation iPhone and perhaps the rumoured iPad Mini will be revealed on the 12th of September. Apple is always very quick to launch their products after they announce them so a launch date during September sounds perfectly reasonable. The report came from John Paczkowski of All Things D and he stated that according to his sources the next iPhone whether it be the iPhone 4S or the iPhone 5 will launch sometime in October of this year and not September as was previously thought. This report states that both of these devices should be seen in September or October of this year and the next iPad could also sport a higher resolution screen. Foxconn are going to be in charge of assembling the device and parts will be obtained from several different makers including Largan Precision, Simplo Technologies, Dynapack International Technology, TPK Holding and Wintek, Catcher. According to rumors Apple are hoping to ramp up the manufacturing of the next generation iPhone and with this list of parts makers it looks as if the rumor is true. What we are not sure of yet is a release of a new iPad this year. Releasing a new iPad 3 would fall out of the iPad�s yearly release cycle. It might be more likely that we will see a new iPod Touch in September or October instead which is actually due for an upgrade this year. The new iPad 3 will probably not be seen until early next year which would actually be consistent with previous released. This report has stated that Apple is planning that the next generation iPad will have a higher resolution screen at 250dpi which will allow for better text and images.
