As many iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owners know, these A5 processer devices have so far not been able to perform firmware downgrades. When Apple releases a new version of iOS they stop signing the older firmware and this means that any official restores result in the user installing the latest official iOS version onto their device. For normal users this isn�t a problem but if you are an iDevice owner who wants to jailbreak their device this is a nightmare because if they accidently upgrade their firmware they have to wait until the Dev-Teams come up with a working jailbreak for the new iOS version. On older devices users can already downgrade their firmware once they have the relevant SHSH blobs saved. In the majority of cases Cydia will automatically capture any available blobs and update the users� Cydia app with the blobs that have been saved. The iPad 2 has been around since March 2011 and the iPhone 4S since October 2011 but there hasn�t been a way for users to downgrade these A5 powered devices. Developer and hacker iH8sn0w now claims to have found a loophole in Apple�s APTicket system that has allowed him to successfully downgrade his iPad 2 from iOS 5.1 to 5.0.1. He also believes that this loophole will allow firmware downgrades on Apple�s new iPad running on the new A5X processors. iH8sn0w shared the news on his twitter account and it basically means that owners of the iPad 2, the new iPad and the iPhone 4S can now downgrade their devices to any firmware they choose.

With over 25 million users already enjoying the delights that iOS 5 has to bring we decided to take a look at exactly what users can expect to gain over their previous version iOS 4. With iOS 5 users get the newly designed Notification Center and improved camera along with iCloud and some less publicized changes that have taken place. One of the changes we want to tell you about is the increase in web browsing speed. Pages now load more than twice as fast using iOS 5 than when running iOS 4. These statistics actually come courtesy of New Relic who actually performed side by side tests on 3,000 web app using Safari 5.1 on iOS 5 and Safari 5.0 on iOS 4. New Relic haven�t however stated what device they used but we are guessing that it was an iPhone 4 or iPod judging by the infographics they released. This information showed that on average, pages load in 9.6 seconds using iOS 4 and just 4.1 seconds when running iOS 5. Apple have always spent a lot of time with the rendering engine that is built into Mobile Safari and it is a good thing too. Even if you don�t upgrade your iPhone to the new iPhone 4S you will still see an increase in web performance if you update your software. iOS 5 is available as a free update for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

It seems that jailbreak hacker p0sixninja of the Chronic Dev Team has announced that five userland exploits have been discovered for the iPad 2 and it seems that this is strongly expected to be used in the next generation iPhone too which means a jailbreak could be imminent. This news was revealed at the jailbreaking convention MyGreatFest. P0sixninja gave the announcement in which he stated that the iPad 2 and iPhone 5 can be jailbroken using five userland exploits which have been discovered over time. It is amazing that five exploits have been discovered and what is even better is that all these exploits are userland ones. P0sixninja has this to say, �it�s the record breaking number of exploits found.� The userland exploits that have been discovered are all related to software. Hardware based exploits can be patched but a hardware revision is going to make any difference in this case. This is great news and it means that the iPhone 5 and iOS 5 should get an untethered jailbreak sooner than expected. The exploits were discovered by the Chronic Dev Team and since the jailbreak that is expected to be announced soon will be userland, it will work on all iOS devices and on all exploit ready iOS versions. This could mean that we will see an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 when the official launch is announced. This is really great news and all the Chronic Dev Team are waiting for is the new iPhone 5 itself to see whether the exploits work or not. Let�s hope it�s good news as we�re sure the entire jailbreak community will be waiting for this.

As you probably already know, Redsn0w 0.9.8b7 available for both Mac and Windows can already jailbreak iOS Beta 7. What you perhaps didn�t know, was that if you rely on a carrier unlock, iPhone developer and hacker iH8sn0w has just released Sn0wbreeze 2.8b7 for Windows which can jailbreak the latest version of iOS 5 and preserve the old baseband. Hacktivation is also supported on the iPhone 4 and 3GS which means they can be unlocked using Ultrasn0w or Gevey SIM. This new version of Sn0wbreeze can also remove the Beta expiry time set by Apple and UDID check so that those who don�t have an Apple Developer account can install iOS 5 Beta 7 on any iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. By default, iOS 5 Beta 7 will expire on October 20th. As with all the current iOS 5 jailbreaks, Sn0wbreeze is also limited to a tethered boot only for devices except for old bootrom iPhone 3GS which is untethered. The iOS 5 jailbreak on the iPad 2 is not supported so unfortunately iPad 2 users won�t be able to make use of it.

This post includes a video highlighting all the enhancements of the new version at the end of the post. The first thing we noticed was the wireless synch which is now live in Beta 2. This is great because now all users have to do is plug in their device once and set it up through iTunes to sync it and then when you device is synching you will see an icon appearing on the iOS status bar. The lock screen design in Beta 2 is also slightly different. The notifications are now more prominent on the lock screen and there is a pull down menu allowing users to access other notifications and take action on them. There is also an enhancement for those who like to do tasks in landscape mode. In previous versions text was almost invisible when the keyboard was enabled but now the virtual keyboard automatically slides out of the way whenever the text underneath is interacted with. iOS 5 is due to be publically released to the general public in the autumn and there are some new devices anticipated too. iOS 5 has brought several improvements and Beta 2 has patched the vulnerability that allowed iOS 5 to be unlocked using a GEVEY Sim card. iOS 5 is currently only available to those who are registered with Apple. This is really bad news for all those jailbreakers and it comes as the Dev Team begin explaining what Apple�s iOS 5 betas are revealing. It seems Apple is determined to combat SHSH blobs moving forward and Apple are aggressively combating the replay attacks that have allowed users to use iTunes to restore to previous firmware versions using saved SHSH blobs. Apple has stated to make more use of the APTicket once you install iOS 5 and beyond and they will be checking on each boot of an iDevice. The problem for jailbreakers is that the APTicket will be uniquely generated every time an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch is restored and this means that existing methods of saving SHSH blobs will no longer work. Apple are also making sure that they are the only ones that will know what the APTicket should be. APTIcket is changing starting with iOS 5 and it is being used like the BBTicket. The LLB and iBoot stages of the boot sequence are also being refined to depend on the authenticity of the APTicket. This is going to happen at every boot and because Apple has the crypto keys to properly sign the per-restore APTicket, replayed APTickets are useless. According to the Dev Team this points to a new approach from Apple but until Apple brings out the final release of iOS 5 the Dev Team are still guessing at what Apple are planning to do. There is still a little bit of good news for jailbreakers and Geohot�s Limera1n which takes effect before any APTicket checks are made could still provide a tethered jailbreak solution. As this is also only going to affect restores starting at iOS 5 and onward Geohot�s Limera1n exploit will work and so should any other tethered jailbreaks.
