It was thought that these passwords were specific to the Gmail accounts in question but now it seems that the credentials have been snatched from external websites of users who signed up using a Google email. No one knows how this massive inventory of emails and passwords has been captured, although according to information that has come to light via Reddit, it's unlikely that Google is at fault. It is being claimed that up to 60% of the leaked emails and passwords are still valid, and may have been collected over a number of years. If you are a Gmail users, particularly one that uses the same password when signing up to certain sites and services, you need to go and change your passwords immediately and check to see if you have been caught up in this latest breach.
