Unless you have been living under a rock, you will have heard of the immensely popular Flappy Bird app that has taken the world by storm and also left so many people wondering why the developer took the decision to remove it. During the weekend so many people were left stunned and confused as Flappy Bird had already amassed over 50 million downloads. It was an overnight success, but developer Dong Nguyen didn't see it like this. After a few days of silence he has finally stepped out and explained why he removed Flappy Bird.
Nguyen spoke to Forbes and stated that the original aim of his game was to help players find a casual way to relax but that this has become lost among the millions of frustrated gamers. The game has become a source of much frustration for many a gamer, with the tricky physics making it a lot more challenging than Nguyen had initially thought. The game quickly became addictive for those who downloaded it and Nguyen said that he felt a moral obligation to remove it from the respective online repositories.
Even before the announcement that the game was to be removed Nguyen was asking people on Twitter to leave him in peace and he also said that commentators were overrating the success of his game. In the Forbes interview, he elaborated on how things have changed dramatically for him, adding that his life has not been as comfortable as it was before and that he has been unable to sleep.
We may not see any more of Flappy Bird but Nguyen will continue to make mobile games and if nothing else, he has gained a sense of confidence after the success of this title. For now though we all have to say goodbye to Flappy Bird and if you were a fan and still have it on your phone then you are one of the lucky ones.
